Toenail Fungus

Toenail fungus is a frustrating problem that affects many people. It can be persistent and hard to get rid of. As many different types of fungi are present throughout the environment, the most common cause of getting a fungal infection is using nail polish or having trauma to the nail.  Once the fungus is present it is usually present forever unless treated.

The feet are especially susceptible to toenail fungus because shoes and socks create the ideal dark and moist environment that fungal infections thrive in. Fungus can spread to the skin of the feet in more severe cases.

Signs of toenail fungus include a thickened nail that has become yellow or brown in color, and debris beneath the nail. The toe may become painful due to the pressure of a thicker nail or the buildup of debris.

Treatment for toenail fungus can vary and there are many, many topical conservative treatments that have been propagated.  None of these treatments have ever been shown to work.  Using Vicks Vapor Rub, Tea Tree oil, Lavender oil, bleach, vinegar, many topcals that are on sale at pharmacies and some topical prescriptions are also available.  According to their own research they are only 3-5% effective if used for 7-9 months.

The topicals bascially don't work.

The only treatments that have been demonstrated to work repeatedly and effectively are the laser therapy or an oral medication.  Both of these have to be used for around 6-8 months in order to have a positive long-lasting effect.  To determine the best treatment process for you, be sure to visit Dr. DiNucci.
